Balinale 2026: Bali International Film Festival Returns to Sanur This June

Bali’s cultural calendar continues to expand well beyond beach clubs and brunch reservations.

From 1-7 June 2026, the Bali International Film Festival (Balinale) returns for its 19th edition, bringing a week of international cinema, premieres and creative exchange to Sanur.

As Indonesia’s first and only Academy Award® Qualifying Festival, Balinale has grown into one of the country’s most respected international cultural platforms. What began in 2007 as a way to connect Indonesian filmmakers with global audiences has evolved into a serious meeting point for storytellers, industry leaders and film lovers from across the world. For travellers in Bali in early June, it offers something refreshingly different from the usual island itinerary.

What is Balinale?

Balinale 2026 will showcase 100 films from 35 countries, selected from more than 1,300 global submissions. The programme spans narrative features, documentaries, animation and short films, with world, international and Asian premieres adding to the anticipation. Since receiving official Oscar® Qualifying status in 2024, the festival has strengthened its position as a legitimate pathway for short filmmakers seeking international recognition, further elevating Bali’s presence in the global film conversation.

Where is Balinale held?

This year’s festival unfolds in Sanur, with ICON Bali Mall serving as the main hub, screenings at Cinema XXI, and special events and forums hosted at The Meru Sanur. The choice of location feels intentional. Sanur’s coastal calm and strong community character offer a relaxed backdrop for screenings and post-film discussions, creating space for conversation rather than spectacle. For travellers considering where to base themselves in early June, Sanur provides an easy cultural anchor with beachfront stays and walkable dining options.

What makes Balinale particularly compelling for Australian travellers is its perspective. It offers a way to experience Bali through storytelling rather than scenery, to engage with Indonesian voices exploring culture, identity and social change, and to see how global filmmakers interpret the region. For visitors already on the island, it provides a structured evening activity that feels thoughtful and immersive. For expats and longer-stay travellers, it has become a reliable cultural touchpoint on the annual calendar.

Balinale may not command the same visual spectacle as a music festival or the immediacy of a culinary event, but that restraint is part of its appeal. It is internationally recognised, quietly influential and deeply rooted in creative exchange. If you are in Bali from 1-7 June 2026, consider swapping one sunset cocktail for a screening. You may leave with an entirely different perspective.

Tickets and screening details are available via the official festival channels at balinale.com and event.tix.id/event/balinale2026
