If You Miss Bali From a Decade Ago, Start With These 10 Places

Ten detours that bring back the magic

If you loved Bali 10 years ago, before every itinerary looked the same, you probably miss the version of the island that rewarded curiosity: quiet roads, empty coastlines, and those “how did we end up here?” days that turned into the best memories. The good news is that Bali still exists. It just lives a little further out, in the pockets you reach by taking the long way.

This list is built for that kind of trip: West Bali and Tabanan road days, misty plantation country, waterfall detours, and north-east coast mornings that start at sunrise and stay slow. It’s less about ticking off hotspots, more about getting back to the feeling that made Bali magic in the first place, a little quieter, a little wilder, and much more free-flowing.

And because this style of exploring means more time on scooters, longer drives, wet steps and spontaneous side quests, it’s worth sorting the essentials early. Fast Cover keeps travel insurance for Bali simple, so you can lock it in and then get on with planning the good part.

Places that feel like “old Bali” in 2026

1) Perancak Mangroves, Jembrana

A calm West Bali eco-stop with mangrove channels and quiet boat rides. It feels worlds away from the beach-town pace, slow, green, and beautifully unhurried.

2) Pura Rambut Siwi, Jembrana

A clifftop sea temple that still feels like a local pause point rather than a tourist circuit must-do. Perfect as a peaceful stop on a West Bali road trip.

3) Kelating Beach, Tabanan

Moody black sand, dramatic surf, and open sky made for long walks and sunset watching. Not a swimming beach, but a strong “wow, Bali is still like this” moment.

4) Nyanyi Beach, Tabanan

Close to Tanah Lot but much quieter, Nyanyi is the kind of beach you go to when you want space to breathe. Great for a late afternoon wander when the light softens.

5) Pupuan Highlands

Coffee and clove country with misty views and winding roads, the sort of inland Bali most visitors never see. A good pick for a day drive when you want green scenery without the crowds.

6) Blahmantung Waterfall, Pupuan

Set among plantations, this waterfall is often described as far less visited than the big-name falls. Go early, and it feels like you’ve stepped into a quieter, older Bali.

7) Yeh Ho Waterfall

Also known locally as Giri Kusuma Waterfall, Yeh Ho is an easy add-on if you’re already doing Jatiluwih rice terraces; it sits nearby and is reached via a short walk from the parking area, a great quick nature detour rather than an all-day mission.

8) Banyu Wana Amertha, Wanagiri

A highland waterfall trail where you can tick off multiple cascades in one visit. It pairs perfectly with a cooler-air day through the Bedugul-Munduk route.

9) Tejakula Coast

North-east Bali’s sleepy coastline is best for slow mornings, blacksand beaches and sunrise energy. The pace here is simple in the best way.

10) Soan Galuh Beach

Over in Tabanan, Soan Galuh is a lesser-known beach best known for its photogenic sea cave and rugged coastline. It’s more about exploring than lounging on the beach,  and ideal if you’re chasing a peaceful, low-key beach detour.

Pick a region and build your trip around it

West Bali + Tabanan road-trip days

Perancak Mangroves, Pura Rambut Siwi, Kelating Beach, Nyanyi Beach, Pupuan, Blahmantung Waterfall, Yeh Ho, Soan Galuh Beach

Best for scenic road trips, black-sand beaches, rice-field nature stops, and that “old Bali” calm without going full remote.

North and north-east reset

Banyu Wana Amertha, Tejakula

Best for cooler-air waterfall days and sunrise-coast mornings that feel slower, quieter, and nature-first.

One Last Thing Before You Chase Old Bali

These places are the reason Bali still feels like Bali, especially when you’re willing to swap busy and booked-out for detours and discovery. But the trade-off for quieter roads and better finds is that you’re moving more: scooter days, longer drives, waterfall trails and last-minute route changes.

If you’re travelling from Australia, it’s smart to organise your Bali travel insurance early, and if riding is part of your plan, check the details around scooter cover so you’re not guessing mid-trip. Fast Cover makes travel insurance for Bali straightforward, which means less time decoding fine print and more time chasing the Bali you remember.
