Ulun Danu Buyan Temple
Ida Maharishi Madura, a rishi from Madura island, built Ulun Danu Buyan Temple. One of his disciple is Arya Wiraraja, who was a historical famous king of Madura, known for his allegiance with Raden Wijaya to dethrone Jaya Katwang, the king of the Kingdom of Kediri in Java. Ida Maharishi Madura helped his disciple to win the war, which is the historical momentum for the rise of Majapahit kingdom, Indonesia?s largest kingdom during medieval era. Ida Maharishi Madura left his position as the head priest of Majapahit, upon receiving divine instruction from Ida Maharishi Markandya to go to Bali. Ida Maharishi Madura then arrived in Bedugul area and built many temples and ashrams. Ulun Danu Buyan Temple is built on a hill at the edge of Lake Buyan. Contrast with the touristy Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, Ulun Danu Buyan Lake is large temple complex, made of carved dark stones, covered with walls. Much quieter lake and misty, the temple is near conserved forest that protects Lake Tamblingan ecosystem. Pura Ulun Danu Buyan has some wrathful figures of Balinese tantric deities and protectors/ guardians.
